Program Description:

Over the course of two-10 weeks terms, the Certificate Program develops animation and Computer-Generated Imagery skills including 3D Modeling, Texture Mapping, Animation, Rendering, Sound Design, Writing and Editing. A combination of instruction and hands-on training introduce the vital competencies to being 3D Computer Animator.

Program Objectives:

The educational objectives of  this program are to teach fundamental competencies of CGI (computer generated imagery) to worldwide industry standards; give students training that is essential for building a career in film, television and online animation;  offer students opportunities to work with active industry professionals; learn the importance of developing rich stories, pitching quality ideas, understanding the production pipeline, meeting budget and schedule constraints and following through with post-production; encourage students to be creative, innovative, responsible and professional in all their work.

Students will learn to:

  • Learn the basic foundations on how to create and develop their own characters
  • Understand the importance of art design and develop a look that is desirable on a 3d medium
  • Realize and create 3D environments
  • Encourage students to be creative, innovative, responsible and professional in all their work

The program consists of lecture hours consisting of theory or new principles,  and on-campus laboratory hours consisting of supervised student practice of a previously introduced theory/principle during which practical skills and knowledge are developed and reinforced.

3D 101 »

(50 hours classroom)

This course is designed to give students a comprehensive guide to getting started with 3D graphics.  The basics of 3D graphics will be taught to the students through the hands on use of Autodesk Maya 2014. They will learn the essential steps in working with 3D software from modeling and texturing through to rendering and compositing. The student will finish with a good understanding of how 3D graphics work and will be ready to tackle more complex challenges in the following term.(Prerequisite: None)

An introductory course critical for writers, directors, producers and other creative practitioners involved in the interpretive process, covering the fundamentals of form, structure, character development and dialogue in both feature-length and short scripts, along with proper screenplay formatting, the Final Draft program, idea-generating techniques, and writing for visuals, not just words. Projects include writing a 3-5 page no-dialogue script for a student-produced short film.  (Prerequisite: None)

Introducing students to the powerful storytelling tools available in the soundtrack and showing how to use them. Sound 101 concentrates on a practical and useful approach to production sound. Students develop skills and gain understanding through demonstrations of the professional acquisition of quality audio tracks and examining and practicing recording strategies and techniques. The emphasis is on providing the highest level of excellence and superiority in production audio. (Prerequisite: None)

This course is an introduction to the history of Animation from early hand drawn films the modern day computer generated movies. Students will study the different methods and techniques of animation. They will examine how history reflects the assumptions of a culture and how artists used their medium to express their style. (Prerequisite: None)

This course is designed to build upon the principles of CAN 101  by introducing students to more advanced Modelling and texturing techniques. The focus will move from creating simple 3D props to more advanced modelling challenges. They will learn strong principles of Modelling and develop professional workflows which will allow them to achieve great finished results. The course will aim to develop the student to a high level of development and technical ability. (Prerequisite: CAN 101)

Lighting and Rendering 203 »

This course is designed to introduce the students to lighting and rendering in Maya. The students will learn the core principles of lighting a scene and using various techniques in rendering it in mental ray in Maya. The course will cover the various types of lights in Maya and how to use them, the different rendering tools and concepts, linear workflow, utilizing mental ray in Maya.(Prerequisite: None)

Sound 303 »

Covering the completion and delivery of the entire soundtrack for the producer and the viewer. Highlighted elements include creative sound design, pre-mix, and the pleasures of the final mix. Students also receive instruction on the techniques of altering sound using basic filters, the fundamentals of Foley, and alternative sound applications using Avid Pro Tools audio software. (Prerequisite: Sound 202)

The Life Drawing Class is geared towards beginning and intermediate drawings students. In class students will draw from a combination of live models and other sources using technique and theory which that will covered in depth during the lecture portion of each class. Class focus is geared towards gesture and quick sketch of the human form so as to be applicable to story boarding, animation and visualization for film. Lectures, on location sketch exercises and homework are given on a weekly basis and will receive feedback and constructive critique by the mentor.

Program Description:

This course is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of a trainee/student on core competencies such as; Produce Key Drawings for Animation, Create 3D Animation and Use an Authoring Tool to Create an Interactive Sequence in accordance with the industry standards. It includes common competencies such as; Apply Quality Standards, Perform Computer Operations.

It also includes basic competencies such as; Lead Workplace Communication, Lead Small Teams, Develop and Practice Negotiation Skills, Solve Problems Related to Work Activities, Use Mathematical Concept and Techniques and Use Relevant Technologies. .  The program is comprised of five 10-week terms.

Program Objectives:

This course is focused on the necessary concepts and theories on creating good and solid characters for 3D animation. The subject covers design and advanced modeling techniques for animation ready characters and creating animation ready rigs. Upon finishing this course students would have a good solid background in creating characters and making them ready for animation.  (Prerequisite: CAN 201)

Computer Animation 302 »

This course is for advanced animation from making your characters “act”, lip syncing, facial animation, creating fight scenes, and refining animation curves. It is focused on creating solid animation arcs and pleasing and highly readable animation. Upon finishing this course the student will have a very good understanding in how to create a believable and entertaining animation.  (Prerequisite: CAN 202)

Designing Virtual Environments »

In this course the student will learn how to create and design good virtual environments for using hard surface modelling.  The subject puts emphasis on creating a realistic and natural designs that would set the tone of the overall “story” the student would like to tell. He would also learn the techniques on how to optimize his scene for practical use. (Prerequisite: Lighting and Rendering 203)

This course provides advanced students with the opportunity to plan and organize their final thesis project. Students work closely with faculty mentor to complete the essential activities needed to translate their scripts into images and sounds. Activities include script breakdown, scheduling, storyboarding, production design and location scouting. At the conclusion of this course, students will be prepared to create their thesis projects in Thesis Production 401.

The subject covers compositing techniques for visual effects and 3d productions. From color correction, rotoscoping, creating set extensions to diigtal explosion effects. By the end the student would have a good understanding on compositing workflows in both live action and 3D productions. (Prerequisite: Term 3 Courses)

On this course the student will create his own 3d animated short story where he would create his own character models, environment and animation. In here he would practice what he has learned from his previous project and create a final product. In the end the student would have his own 3d animated short with the complete trimmings of good quality animation. (Prerequisite: Term 3 Courses)

Thesis Post-Production 501 »

(20 hours classroom, 50 hours lab)

Students will focus on the post-production stage of their Thesis Project, with input and feedback from mentors as a rough edit blossoms into a final cut. A sequential outline of post-production activities will be followed with specific deadlines for completion. Students will present their finished Thesis Project to a jury of mentors in a formal Thesis Project Defense. Students will be graded on concept, on artistic and technical merits, and on a production portfolio. Thesis Project that successfully pass the defense process will be presented in a public screening on Graduation Day. (Prerequisite: Thesis Production 401)
